What we collect

What the application asks for: your name and contact details (email, phone, home state), your military background (branch, MOS, rank, separation date, discharge type, status), your academic record (education, schools, GPA, and LSAT or GRE scores, including practice scores), the JD programs and goals you are pursuing, optional special circumstances, the advising you want, and how you heard about us. We do not ask for your date of birth, full home address, Social Security number, disability status, or demographic information such as race or gender, and we ask you not to include medical or diagnosis details anywhere in the form.

Why, and who sees it

We use your information to pair you with a volunteer mentor who fits your goals and background, and to run the program: reviewing applications, recording pairings, and tracking aggregate outcomes. The people who see it are the program staff who review and match; a prospective mentor we invite, who sees your profile so they can decide whether to take you on; and the mentor you pair with, who then has your profile and contact details to work with you. We do not sell your information. Service to School uses third-party tools, including AI services, to help automate parts of mentor matching and to deliver program email; they process application information on our behalf, not for their own purposes.

The veterans directory (opt-in, mentors only)

Approved S2S mentors are listed in a members-only directory of fellow student veterans and alumni, organized by law school, so members can find each other. Your listing shows other verified members your name, email, phone, service background, law school, and class year, plus anything optional you add (employer, practice area, clerkship, a short note about what to ask you, and a link to your LinkedIn profile). We store no photographs; your card shows your initials. The LinkedIn field is a link you supply, and following it takes you to LinkedIn under their terms, not ours.

The directory is visible only to verified members, approved S2S mentors across participating law schools, and to S2S program staff who administer it, as they already can the underlying mentor records. You can unlist yourself at any time from the mentor portal, one checkbox, and your details disappear from every roster immediately. It is not public, not indexed by search engines, and never sold. We record when you last confirmed your details and show other members how current that is, so the roster stays trustworthy. A chapter president appointed by S2S at your school can correct a member's email or phone, and every such edit is logged. You can unlist yourself at any time from the mentor portal, which removes you from the roster immediately, and you can ask us to delete your data using the address below.

How this is run

Service to School is a nonprofit, and this program is run in large part by part-time volunteers rather than a full-time security team. That is why we keep what we collect deliberately small: the less we hold, the less there is to protect, so we avoid the most sensitive categories entirely (no Social Security number, no financial details, no medical information, no home address). Your information lives in a managed database with access controls, so you can only see your own application and only program staff can see the applicant pool. We follow sound practices but operate on a best-effort basis and cannot promise the security guarantees of a large company. If a problem ever affects your information, we will tell you promptly and work to make it right. We ask for your understanding as a small, volunteer-run effort serving veterans at no cost.

This program is run by Service to School. To ask a question, or to have your information deleted, email s2s.jd@service2school.org. Submitting the application records your agreement to this policy; if it changes in a meaningful way, we will ask again.
